Shop Summer Now!

Summer sales are in full swing but fading fast. Even though it’s hard to think of leaves, pumpkins and chilly nights in this heat-wave, the autumn styles will be out before you know it. Forget “Back-to-School” – the craft stores are already displaying Halloween and Thanksgiving items!! (This is actually good for all of us crafters to get a head start on the upcoming holidays!)

If you scroll back through my posts, an entire year, you’ll find out how much I love the “Red Hanger Sale” at Talbots – it’s definitely the time to stock up! Prices are completely slashed. Not only are spring and summer items redlined, they are an additional 50% off of the sale price. Want a deeper discount? Use your Talbots card for an extra 5% off everything (think of it as almost covering the tax).

In addition, this weekend, regular price styles are ALSO 50% off. That includes swimsuits and their new July collection.

Today I got to sport some of my finds for Dress Down Friday at work. The “Perfect Sleeveless Shirt” is exactly as named: Perfect. It’s iron-free and completely wearable right out of the dryer. The beautiful marigold color definitely brightens things up after a week full of classic navy and black! This was originally $69.50 – marked down to $64.50. Slice that in half and the shirt ran just over $30! That’s 55% off!

Now, if you’re patient – these prices will be discounted even further within the next few weeks but the racks clear fast!

Since it’s Friday, I was allowed to wear denim, and my new “Not Your Daughters Jeans” from Nordstrom Rack accompanied the button up shirt perfectly! Okay, okay, maybe NYDJ’s are not made for under-thirty-somethings or under-forty’s for that matter, BUT my skinny jeans just don’t cut it for the office and if you spent just one day in NYDJ’s I promise you’ll be hooked! I’ll just save my 7 for All Mankind and True Religion styles for the weekends.

Not only are these the most comfortable jeans I’ve ever worn, I NEVER tugged at the waistband or pulled them up the entire day. That’s pretty much unheard of for my sans-hips self. Besides that, they’re not too tight, nor too baggy and have just the right amount of stretch. PLUS, I did NOT have to get them hemmed – they were somehow the PERFECT length. Bring on a few more pairs (especially if I could find more at the price I paid)!

I stopped by Nordstrom Rack about a week ago and found these jeans on the clearance rack marked down to $17.10 – only $18.19 with tax! These were originally $114 so that’s exactly 85% off? I’ll take it!

My entire outfit was $20 LESS than what the shirt alone would have cost me if I paid full price for it (if that were to EVER happen).

‘Till next time – stay cool and grab your summer finds before it’s too late!

Then and Now:

Days can go by so quickly when schedules get hectic: between sleep, work, fitness, social activities, cooking, eating and cleaning, 24 hours passes in the blink of an eye.  But, when you add 365 days together, so much more can happen!

I think back to a year ago, when I was flying to Florida to take a week-long road trip with my fiancé (now husband) up to Connecticut.  A year later, our wedding and honeymoon are behind us, and that road trip seems like such a distant memory.

But I still remember enough to tell you about it:

We took a lot of breaks on our 1000mile road trip, to explore new areas and sight see.  After stopping in Savannah, Georgia for lunch and a trolley tour, we made our way to Charleston, South Carolina.  Besides the bought of ghost activity in the Barksdale House Bed & Breakfast (still spooks me!), we loved the area.  We found a strip of stores and restaurants within walking distance of our B&B and definitely took advantage of strolling around to stretch our legs.

Not only did I pick up a pair of Pink Tusk-In-Sun elephant shorts at Lilly Pulitzer (which were sold out in my size everywhere else at the time!), Kate Spade was also having their annual Work.Play.Sale!  I had a ball trying on piles of clothes in their beautifully wallpapered fitting room adorned with velour bow-shaped pillows and inspirational quotes on the mirrors.

At this point our wedding was 10 months away – but by now you should know I plan ahead! (Way ahead!)  As I contemplated between a few dresses, I decided on the cream colored fit&flare Tanner dress – knowing it would be perfect for our rehearsal dinner.  It’s a comfortable blend of cotton & silk that can be dressed up or down.

The (original) price was a little hefty: $448.  BUT: the sale price slashed that in half to $224.  Calculate the additional 30% off… down to $156.80! That’s 65% off!!

What comes around goes around – it’s a year later and the Work.Play.Sale is BACK at Kate Spade until July 5th!  Check our their website or a local store to receive an additional 30% off their already-reduced sale items!

And a year later… The reveal out of the garment bag:

Spring Treats! (Special Coupon Code in Post!)

Hopefully you took advantage of some of the “Leap Year” sales & deals yesterday, like a free cup of tea at David’s Tea!

If not, there’s still so many deals for spring ahead (21 days away, but who’s counting!).

In addition to the spring countdown, I have a few others going on… my wedding and honeymoon to name a few!  In just over three months I’ll be headed to clear turquoise water, white sand and palm trees swaying in the breeze.

Lands End has been sending me e-mails galore full of new spring and summer merchandise, and when I saw an adorable polka dot bikini, they had my attention.  Each piece was pretty pricy since these are brand new items,
but I thought I could treat myself for this special tropical trip ahead.
Plus, their baiting suit fit and quality are certainly hard to beat.

image

Even though I was treating myself, I still couldn’t bear to pay full price (WHY should I?)
I didn’t have to.  It’s Friends & Family!  Right now, your ENTIRE Lands End purchase is an additional 30% off!  You’ll also receive free shipping if you spend over $50!

Until Midnight tonight, you can get this deal too using Code: PAL302 Pin: 7000

Have fun stocking up for spring (or grabbing last minute winter clearance for next year)!
‘Till next time, save a dime!

It’s time to CLEAR THE RACKS!

Literally everyone flocked to the mall yesterday, it was worse than the week before Christmas. Maybe for the sales, maybe to warm up from the negative temperatures outside. Either way, lines were long, hands were full of shopping bags, and winter clearance items were flying off the racks.

After a trip to the mall with my mom, where I redeemed my free makeover offer at Sephora, and picked up two pairs of shoes for under $25 each (over 75% off)… it made sence to stop at Nordstrom Rack down the street.  They’re holding their “Clear the Rack” sale, which offers an additional 25% off of all red or blue clearance tags!

I’ll admit, sifting through racks was a bit difficult – the shoppers before us must have stampeded the store, and associates couldn’t bring unwanted items out from the dressing rooms as fast as they were coming in.  But, in all the chaos, my mom happened to see a Kate Spade Tropical Peplum Sheath Dress – in my size!  It’s absolutely perfect for summer – cottony and comfortable.  I can easily throw it on for work with a solid cardigan, or dress it up for a nice dinner out!

I knew the dress was pulled from the clearance rack, but I was sure in for a surprise when I actually looked at the price tag.  This $378 dress, was marked down to $34.97 – Did someone mismark it?  That was 91% off!

When the dress rang up, it was NOT $34.97 – after applying the additional
25%, it came to $26.33 – that’s 93% off of the original price!!!!

I know Nordstrom Rack can be hit-or-miss, but yesterday,
it was certainly worth the trip!

‘Till next time, keep your eyes open for the best deals and shop in pairs for a double set of eyes!

Do NOT Settle – for High Prices!

The last time I posted about price comparisons, was when I purchased my awesome Dyson Cordless Vacuum back in November (I’m still in love with its capabilities)… so this time, lets talk style.

More often than not, a person will go to a store or go on a website, see something they like, and purchase it.  That’s great, if you don’t mind wasting money (in my case today, over $100!)  With the internet in our hands, literally, it’s more easy than not to spend a measly 3 minutes goggling that item to make sure it’s not cheaper somewhere else.

So, here’s what happened to me.  Salt has been an enemy to my favorite black leather boots, and no matter how many times I polish them, the stains keep coming back.  So, considering I’ve had them since my college days, it’s time for a new pair.  I’ve tried pair after pair this winter, not loving any that I’ve seen.  I also think that a good pair of black boots is an investment – they’re a winter staple in Connecticut between October and March.  They should be good quality and they should last winter after winter – but there’s only so much you should invest… no matter what, they wont last forever.

Yesterday, I got an e-mail from Bloomingdales announcing a great presidents day sale, and low and behold a beautiful pair of black leather Kate Spade boots, originally $398, marked down to $139.29 (this weekend only!)  That price goes up to $198.99 on February 15th.  But they did not have my size – bummer!

image

A few websites later, I noticed Nordstrom DID have my size.  But the SAME EXACT boots were $238.80 (only 40% 0ff the original price).  Why on earth would I pay $99 more for the same product?!  Being savvy, and having used their price match policy before, I contacted Nordstrom customer service to ask for the price to be adjusted.  Well, there’s a catch.  They noticed that Bloomindales didn’t have my size available so they wouldn’t match the price for me.  So they just lost my sale.

I was aggravated, it was frustrating.  And I really wanted these boots!  So, this morning, I decided to check one more time – to see if Nordstrom happened to adjust their pricing online.  They didn’t, but it was definitely my lucky day.  Bloomindales magically had size 8 in stock!  I added them to my cart with the click of a button and got the boots for 65% off!!!  I also used my (free) loyalist card, which gives me automatic free shipping, and double points on my footwear purchase!
I’m pretty sure I got the last pair, because size 8 is sold out again!

‘Till next time, stay warm & stylish this winter
and COMPARE for the best deal!

Huge Tommy Bahama Online Outlet Sale – I saved 77%!

OUTLET SALE ALERT AT TOMMY BAHAMA!

Normally, Tommy Bahama products are pricy, but not during their online outlet sales! An e-mail notified me of the sale, and I’m so glad I checked it out!  It’s their last sale of 2015 and will be over by midnight.

I happen to think their swimwear is great quality, and super cute!  Clearly I’m dreaming of warm, sunny days even though those are seven months away…
I purchased 15 items (six swimsuit bottoms, two swimsuit tops, one one-piece baiting suit, two rash-guards, one swim dress/cover-up, one pair of pants and two boyfriend-shirt cover-ups) which retailed $1,179 +tax – yikes!

I purchased ALL of these items for $270 – that’s 77% off!
(my end total came to $292.46 after adding tax & shipping)

Want the deal too? All you have to do is go to the Tommy Bahama website and scroll to the bottom.  The outlet section shows, with a link to “Start Shopping”.  They’ll ask you for an e-mail account, and you’re in within minutes!

Until midnight tonight (October 27th), every single woman’s swim item is $20 (including one-piece, bottoms, tops, rash-guards and cover-ups).  There are other great clothing items and home items as well.  If you happen to spend $300+, you’ll get an additional 10% off of your purchase with code SAVEBIG.  Shipping was a reasonable $5.  When I ordered, there was a ton of matching sets, but act fast as the items go quickly – and they can even disappear from your shopping cart!
The link to the outlet sale will disappear at midnight.

I am so excited to wear these beach outfits, I’m pretty much set for the next five summers!!
– Check back for updates –
I’ll post photos when they arrive in the mail!

‘Till next time – save & stay stylish!

Why would your rent when you can buy for less?

As I was deciding what to write about a few things crossed my mind, like Tax-Free Week.  But then I started wondering, why do people bother with the hassle of renting dresses, when they can buy and own them for almost the same price?

RentTheRunway: the website where you rent an item of clothing or accessory for 4-7 days, and then return it.  I can think of one reason to use this site – you live in a studio apartment in the City and don’t have a closet.  If you don’t fit that description – then I would definitely steer clear of RentTheRunway.

While I’ve never actually rented from the RentTheRunway (and never will), I have browsed it quite a few time.  While I understand the concept, I just don’t understand why anyone would use this site to rent clothes for four days when they can own the same exact product.  Maybe you’re thinking, “Some of these are $1,000+ dresses that I can’t afford.”  Well, yeah there are some $1,000 dresses (original price!).  But they are also most likely on sale at Saks, Bloomingdales or Neiman for just slightly higher, the same or even lower than the rental price.

Lets take a look at a few examples from some of my favorite dress designers (dress photos below):
ML Monique Lhuillier & Carmen Marc Valvo

Example #1:
A gorgeous cobalt blue ML Monique Lhuillier sheath which originally retailed for $398 can be rented on RentTheRunway for $75 (4 day rental) or $120 (8 day rental).
The dress is actually selling for $398 at Bloomingdales.
The same exact dress is currently on sale at Lord&Taylor for $298.50, free shipping, free returns, plus an additional 20% off with code SUMMER, bringing it to $238.  But, that’s not cheap enough.  Keep looking.
Guess what, the same exact dress is on sale at Saks Fifth Avenue (online) for $148.06, free shipping, free returns – almost every size is still available too.  If you sign up for e-mails you get an additional 10% off bringing it to $133.26 to OWN – plus if you shop with your discover credit card through Saks on shop discover, you’ll get an additional 10% cashback bonus toward your credit statement.  So if you’re doing the 8 day rental, wouldn’t you rather own this dress, for only $13 more!  Don’t need it right away? Wait until Saks has an additional 25% or 30% off their sale items, it’ll be even CHEAPER than renting for 8 days.

Example #2
A long flow-y Coral “Ella” Toga Neckline Gown by Carmen Marc Valvo that originally retails for $1,075 can be rented for $160 (4 day rental) or $256 (8 day rental)
Saks wins again.  Same exact dress = $266 to own in either the coral color or royal blue.  Use that 10% coupon from signing up for e-mail bringing it to $239.40 and it’s CHEAPER than renting for 8 days.

(I could go on and on.  There are plenty more examples with Kay Unger, Teri Jon, Badgley Mischka, Kate Spade, ect.)

Another reason I don’t understand RentTheRunway:
Normally, when I buy a dress or jumpsuit I need it altered in some way to fit perfectly: taken in through the waist, shortened, or taken up in the shoulders.  Unless you are 6′ tall or going to wear 4″ heals, don’t count on a maxi dress, ball gown or jumpsuit from RentTheRunway fitting you.
And since you don’t own the item – you can’t alter it anyway.  Plus, who wants to deal with making sure the mailman delivers it on time and making sure it gets back to the company by your deadline!  If you don’t even see it until the day you wear it, or one day before how do you know what shoes & accessories work well?

At least if you buy a dress from a department store and it doesn’t fit, or if you don’t end up wearing it, you can simply return it for a refund.  If that dress you rented doesn’t fit you, or if you end up not wearing it, you’ve lost your expensive rental fee!  Next time you consider renting – take the time to check a few websites and find it on sale – for cheaper than the renal fee.

Only end up wearing the designer dress once?  Bring it to an upscale consignment shop (such as Second Time Around) or sell it on e-bay or Tradesy.  You’ll most likely be able to sell it for the sale price that you paid.
(If you keep the original tags, that helps the resale value when selling!)

Deep into Summer, Deep into Savings

As the hours of daylight get shorter each day, and the nights get just a little bit cooler, stores need to make way for their new autumn inventory – and that’s good news for shoppers! Take Talbots for example: about a month ago, they marked down their entire summer line and added an additional 30% off sale prices soon after.  30% turned into 40% off… and now the sale has deepened even further to an additional 50% off most clothing, and an additional 60% off shoes, accessories & dresses!

Honestly, the longer you wait, the better the sale will be.  By mid August, the sale at Talbots can reach anywhere between 70-80% off the already marked-down prices – and they’ll still have plenty in stock to choose from! Unless you fall in love with an item, and it’s the last one left in your size – be patient!

I was not very patient, but I still got this great summer outfit that will take me into the beginning of autumn for UNDER $50!  Even though it’s stylish, it’s not too trendy – these are classic items that I can bring back year after year!  The shirt was 50% off the markdown at Talbots ($17.50 down from $39.50), the matching sneakers were 60% off the markdown at Talbots ($16 down from $79.50), and the chinos were 60% off the markdown at J.Crew ($16 down from $75)!  I could have paid $194 for these three items, but I ended up saving 74%!  I could have saved even more with the extra savings tip below –

Extra Savings Tip: If you have a Talbots charge card, you will save an additional 5% on top of all the other savings this weekend! Or if you open up a new card, you’ll get an even better deal – an additional 15% on top of all other savings! Be sure to sign up for a free rewards card too, so you can build up points toward rewards certificates with every purchase.
